Happy Valentine's Day

Contributing to the commercialization of Valentine’s Day will not be a problem for me this year. I have .69cents left.

My card challenge today-I got 5 free boxes of Kraft Dinner. Brand name stuff, lucky guy. I wasn't exactly looking forward to a romantic boiled potato for dinner. But, some KD and a potato! Ill shape it into a heart or something and eat my fill.

My challenge card "friend" that has borrowed 4bucks from me better start some kind of payment plan soon. I could use that money.

Even with no ketchup with my Kraft dinner, today is a good day.

Yesterday I missed a blog, it was a full day. My challenge was to volunteer for an hour. Instead I signed up for a volunteer committee at work. I'll end up doing more than an hour but should be fun anyways.

The best part of yesterday were two simple acts of kindness and the realization this challenge is getting some attention:

While on lunch break at work yesterday I was wandering the store looking for food. Affordable food. Soup was almost as much as the small meat option, so I did meat. Cost about 5bucks. Now I’m broke. I’m don't even have bus fare broke. Thats broke.

So there I am in the store looking for food based on price not taste or want. I had 5bucks and needed a change from potatoes and eggs so I didn’t pack a lunch. I was walking around the store holding the food I WANTED.  Knowing I couldn't have it. Much like a child in the cereal aisle or me in the pudding aisle on a normal day. I put it back it back, twice. It smelled too good to only put back once.

A staff member, the baker, at the store recognized me from the paper. We chatted a little about the cause. Then she pulled fresh chocolate kiss cookies from the oven...It was a big ol’ cookie with a chocolate kiss in the middle and smelled like it was worth a million dollars. She offered me one! For free!

If I lived off the food people have offered me all week I would be eating better than I do on a normal day, so I had to no thank you.  It was very nice of her.

As I walking towards the food I had just put back, for the third time, my partner offered to buy me lunch. My mouth started to water like a Saint Bernard. There was no way I could pay her back so again I stuck to my budget. I have lost four pounds since the start of this challenge. That's not cool.

I had a dream last night my little dog turned into a roast chicken, maybe more of a Cornish hen. I think about food a lot. I read a cook book for fun last night? I’m really looking forward to my no limits food binge after this challenge is over.

Your lunch looks good again today.

Yesterday again I got to sit and watch a friend eat lunch at a restaurant while I sat there. Some people are starting to tease me a bit about being short of cash all the time but the same people are the first to offer me a part of their lunches or snacks. I say no thank you and stick to my food budget the best I can.

No progress on the volunteer front yet. Starting tomorrow I should have time to look into some volunteering.

I woke up this morning and I guess I was feeling generous... My challenge card today says I lent a friend two bucks, again! Jeez I haven't even got the money back I lent him the first time.

My daily piece of chicken plan didn't work. Its all gone. For the most part just eggs and potatoes left now. ugh, but lucky to have something to eat.

Times are tough.

Food Please

I missed my entry last night but I sure remember the day. MY food shortage is very noticeable. I’m only getting two small meals a day. Eating healthy but it’s just not enough. By 3pm I am out of energy and dinner is five hours away at least on a work day. I even had to dip into the canteen at work...on credit pop and chips. I don’t even bring my little money pouch with me in the hope of stopping any impulse buying. Yesterday I had the experience of watching a friend eat lunch at a restaurant while I sat there foodless and hungry.
The challenge card yesterday was giving my dog a treat. Short on time and funds yesterday I ended up sharing my daily piece of chicken with Gizmo. He enjoyed it of course. Was so tired I barely noticed I went to bed hungry again.
Today my challenge card is to volunteer for an hour before this challenge week is over. I ll let the gears turn on that one today.
I have 7.78 cents left

Day Three

Good Morning

Opened my challenge card today and had to laugh. Finally caught a break! My challenge today is to give my pet a treat. My dog, Gizmo is pumped. My actual cash count is $10.78. Ive only got 3 pieces of chicken left. One piece a day was the plan and a bunch of potatoes and eggs.  So, we'll see what I come up with for a his treat. It definitely wont be his usual designer $6.00 rawhide bone.

I find myself counting my money every couple hours just to make sure its all still there. Food is scarce. Money is low and this challenge card envelope is looking pretty full still.

To help save some money in the long run I turned the heat down in the house even more then usual. I came home to frozen pipes. Lucky no repair bill to dip into my $10.78. Maybe the dog's treat is a super warm  house today...and a hot bath when I get home. Sounds like a treat for me too.

Off to work, no breakfast, with a lunch bag of two boiled eggs and an apple plus all the tap water I can drink.

Off I go!

End of day two

Well my answer to my challenge card of a tooth ache was a simple bottle of Tylenol. It was the simplest and only affordable option I could think of. Dentist is not in the budget, I know that much. I don't know what I would do if seeing a Dr when I was hurting was a distant option. Kind of scary.

Today was a long day for sure. I ate fairly healthy today but only had two  small meals all day. Im going to bed hungry.

I hope my challenge card tomorrow is the Lottery numbers! I only have around 10dollars left.

The Cold

Its 530am, today I am working. My day is starting with a skipped breakfast in the hope of saving more food for dinner and a little bit of money in the long run. Lunch today is a simple one. Two boiled eggs and a boiled potato with an apple for a snack. By dinner time at 8pm I will definitely be looking forward to my one piece of chicken and a salad of just lettuce.
My challenge card today says I have an aching tooth that I think is infected. Paying for a Dentist is out of the question. I’ll stop by the drug store today and see if I can afford anything for the pain.
I never factored in that I like to chew gum. Can’t afford it this week. Its minus 27 today! On this type of budget cold days or weeks like this would make budgeting even more of a challenge. Just staying comfortable with basic warmth would put someone in a debt.

Day One/There might be a problem

Wow this might be more a challenge then I thought. I had to stay up late last night eating all the food in the house. Had to make sure I didn't "cheat". I know for sure if I found a tasty morsel laying around during the challenge Id snack it down. So I just ate it all instead... Inside the rules yesterday.

Today I got up early and BAM right off I lose two dollars. My challenge card told me I had lent a friend $2.00.  Down 2 bucks already and no breakfast.

My plan for the day was to walk down to the Keewatin library to blog on the free internet and then city bus it to the grocery store in Kenora.

So off I stomped all bundled up, for the minus 18 weather, headed for the Keewatin library. I assume there is internet there and I also assumed the library would be open. Wrong for sure on the open part. So, I got to wait around an extra 45minutes for my bus. The bus showed up exactly on time and the bus driver was very nice, although may have wondered why I had so many questions.

The last time a rode a bus was years and years ago. The experience has not changed. But the price sure has! Did you know its 2bucks to ride the bus one way?  On the advice of a fellow passenger I unloaded myself at market square and made the short, cold windy and uphill, walk to Safeway. The hike was good for me. Without the luxury of my car I even wore a pack sac to carry my grocery purchases.

I’ll admit, I’m not a shopper. I tried to be more frugal than usual. Because it was cheaper I even settled on a toothbrush with a colour far from my favourite.  Besides getting TP, tooth brush and paste I got a package of chicken, bread, head of lettuce...99cent score and 18eggs. There might be a problem. I’m broke, I have less then 20bucks left.

Two dollar bus ride home. I don't think so. I walked home to Keewatin from Safeway. Took an hour.

And to top it all off, Pudding was on sale today. 5 for 3dollars.
